Digital traceability

Traceability already exists. What is missing is the ability to verify it.

Vertical columns of light evoking data flows and tracking

The agri-food sector records every link in the chain: farm of origin, intermediate operators, processing facilities, batches. The information exists. Data is not the problem; the problem is assessing that the systems managing it do so with integrity, completeness and authenticity. Data that can feed product traceability processes with legal compliance guarantees, or new instruments such as the European Business Wallet or the Digital Product Passport.

Knowing where a product comes from and how it has been transformed is not only a legal obligation but can become a commercial advantage. New obligations and opportunities arise from the digitisation of traceability processes, such as their incorporation into the DPP (the digital product passport of the Ecodesign Regulation, ESPR), or for meeting the verifiability requirements for environmental claims and the supply-chain audits that large retailers pass on to their suppliers.

Certicar has audited traceability on livestock farms and in processing industries (beef, Iberian pork, dairy) for years. CerteIDAS adds the digital trust layer to that activity: we assess that traceability systems and processes meet the applicable requirements, so that the verified attributes (origin, designation, certified animal welfare, audited traceability) can be issued as electronic attestations of attributes under eIDAS 2.0, stored in the operator’s business wallet and referenced in the product’s digital passport.

The fusion of the agri and digital worlds, bringing CerteIDAS’s expertise together in a single assessment.

Scope

What we assess

From the mandatory record to the verifiable credential, with the same rigour at every stage of the chain.

Operational traceability

  • Traceability systems and processes under Regulation (EC) 178/2002 and sector rules (SITRAN and REGA for animal traceability, Letra-Q in the dairy sector, the Iberian pork quality standard);
  • Product and holding attributes suitable for electronic attestation: origin, designation, quality grade, certified animal welfare;
  • Integrity and security of traceability systems (see Food cybersecurity).

Digital trust layer (eIDAS 2.0)

  • Issuers of electronic attestations of attributes under ETSI TS 119 471 and TS 119 472;
  • Agri-food attribute attestation schemes and their mapping to the digital product passport (ESPR) and the European Business Wallet.

What sets us apart

We audit the chain and we know the standard that will make it verifiable.

We combine Certicar’s agri-food audit experience with our participation at ETSI in the standards for electronic attestations of attributes and in the European digital identity framework. We do not assess traceability from outside the trust ecosystem: we know both sides.

Where we stand

A field still being built, and we say so.

The digital product passport is rolled out by product category through delegated acts, and food is not in the first waves. The European Business Wallet is still a proposal for a Regulation. None of this prevents assessing traceability today or preparing attestation schemes on the digital identity wallet already in operation.
